Project 8 - Video Part 2

HOME

For this longer video, the guidelines were that it had to include three perspectives, be less than seven minutes, and not have just the original audio for any clip.

When I was home one weekend, I took a bunch of short videos around our house. I focused on entire rooms, then parts of each room and individual objects that I viewed as key to that room's identity or were significant to me or my mom or dad.

I strung the videos together and showed this "skeleton" of the video to my mom and then my dad. I had them each separately record their voices, talking about any specific parts of the video along with general thoughts about what home means to them.

I then went through and placed the audio with the corresponding parts of the video, changing the length of each clip as necessary. I then recorded audio of myself in the same way, and added that to the video. As I'm an only child, it worked really well with the "three perspectives" guideline to have the three of us narrating. I removed any sections that none of us had talked about, along with the sections that were less interesting, until I was satisfied with the results and it was close to seven minutes.

As I lived in the same house all the way up until college, home is something that is very important to me. The house I grew up in holds a special place in my heart, and it always will. It was really interesting to go around our house and rediscover elements of it. I found it fun to see where all three of our narrations overlapped. Certain things, like the cat bush, the clock from my grandparents' house in Washington, and our address, were emphasized by more than one of us. I also saw some recurring themes, like art, plants, our cats, and California and Washington. Overall, it was really enjoyable to document the state of my home at this moment in time while also reflecting on past memories.
