Project 1 - Inflatables

For this project, Sharon Ko, Marissa Lin, and I collaborated to create a temporary installation. We used plastic tablecloth material for the majority of our piece, using an iron to melt pieces together. We also used some tape and paper to attach our piece to a large fan.

Our piece is a re-designed rainbow. It begins with a cloud shape, out of which three tubes cascade over the side of the third floor of Adams to the courtyard outside Porter Theatre. Each tube branches into two more tubes about half way down; these parts are more abstractly shaped. There are a few small clouds attached near the ends of the tubes.

Originally, we considered using prompts from the alternative syllabus (Paul Thek's Teaching Notes), such as "redesign a rainbow" and "how do you know you're happy, sad, nervous, bored?" Some early ideas included a set of inflated, amoeba-like shapes in each color of the rainbow, set like columns that people could walk around and through. However, we decided to incorporate the positive, cheerful frame of the prompt from the original syllabus, titled "Sentinels for a Fresh Start." This lead to the idea of creating tubes for each color of the rainbow, which we then simplified to the final concept of a sort of trinity-rainbow, branching off into semi-abstract ends.

The end product is a three-to-six strand deconstructed rainbow, created out of teal, fuchsia, and white plastic, draped from the overhang of the third to the second floor of the Adams building. Our goal was to create a quirky, fun "welcome sign" to brighten up students' days when they walk past.
